Why “Donum”
dōnum
DOH-noom  ·  noun  ·  Latin
  1. A gift; a present.
  2. Something given freely, as an expression of goodwill or gratitude.
From the Latin verb dare, “to give.” It is the root of English words like donate and donor.
The story behind our name

Giving well is one of the oldest traditions there is

The Romans understood the power of a gift. At the turn of each new year they exchanged a strena, a gift carrying wishes of good fortune and health. When a guest arrived, they offered xenia, gifts to welcome a newcomer into the household.

Those two customs are exactly what corporate gifting is today: welcoming new people into your company, and marking the season with gratitude and good wishes.

We chose donum because it is the simplest, truest word for what we do. Not swag. Not a perk. A gift, given freely, chosen with care, and meant to be used.

Donum. A gift freely given.

Companies already spend heavily on gifts. The research suggests the difference between a gift that builds goodwill and one that is forgotten comes down to choosing well, not spending more.

How to Choose Well

Six principles for corporate gifts people value

  1. Choose useful over expensive. Recipients overwhelmingly prefer a practical gift they will use to a costly one they won't.
  2. Avoid the generic. A forgettable gift can do more harm than no gift at all.
  3. Include everyone. Pick gifts that work as well for remote employees as for those in the office.
  4. Add a personal note. A few sincere words make a gift noticeably more meaningful.
  5. Consider gifts that give back. A gift tied to a cause is remembered and talked about.
  6. Plan ahead. Custom and logo-branded gifts can take weeks or months, especially before the holidays.
Common Questions

Corporate gifting, answered

What is a good welcome gift for a new employee?

The best new hire gifts are useful from day one and work whether someone joins in the office or remotely. Wellness gifts, quality everyday items with your logo, and gifts that give back are all strong choices. A short welcome note from the manager or team adds a personal touch.

What makes a corporate Christmas gift memorable?

Thoughtfulness and usefulness. Surveys show most recipients value the thought behind a gift more than its price, and many would rather receive nothing than something generic. Choose gifts people will actually use in the new year, and include a sincere note.

When should we order holiday gifts for employees and clients?

As early as possible. In-stock items often ship within days, but custom or logo-branded gifts can take two to three weeks, and some custom items take months. Ordering in early fall avoids holiday delays.

Are corporate gifts tax deductible?

It depends on who receives the gift, its value and how it is given. Wellness gifts and programs may offer tax advantages. Check with your corporate accounting team before you order.

How do we include remote employees?

Choose gifts that ship directly to each person's home and don't depend on being in the office. Many gifting companies, including FitSnacks, can drop ship individually to every recipient.

Reported in “Why corporate holiday gifts matter more than ever” (Compartés via Stacker, AOL, October 14, 2026).
  3. Survey results reflect what respondents report; they do not prove that gifts cause retention or engagement. Some surveys were commissioned by gifting companies.
About This Guide

Who is behind DonumGift, and how we choose

Curated by Suze, founder of DonumGift · Last updated October 2026

DonumGift is written by Suze, who has spent more than 15 years working in luxury retail and alongside HR professionals on employee wellness. She started this guide because companies kept asking the same question every onboarding season and every December: what can we give that people will actually use?

How we choose. Every gift here has to be practical, well made and easy for a company to order, whether for five people or five hundred. We favor gifts that work for remote and in-office employees alike, and companies that make ordering in quantity simple. Prices, minimums and lead times come from each company's own website and were checked when this page was last updated.
